Research Teams

BIG is currently maintaining six research teams. Each team is led by at least two undergraduate students. Researchers have open access to the equipment in the TEAM lab as well as limited access to equipment in the Genome and Biomedical Sciences Facility.

In order to become an active member of a research team, applicants must spend one month shadowing their prospective project — i.e. attending weekly meetings and open events. All BIG researchers must also complete mandatory lab safety training, which can be facilitated in the TEAM lab.

Joining a research team

Applications are accepted at the beginning of the quarter.

Biotechnology Entrepreneurship Program (BEP)

BEP provides support for individuals and teams who are interested in developing a unique research project. Members of this program are taught how to:

  • Form an initial research idea

  • Acquire funding

  • Develop an experimental plan and carry out research

  • Participate in startup competitions

  • Form relationships with mentors, advisers, and potential customers

A project idea is not required to apply for BEP. However, ideal candidates for the program are well-versed in laboratory skills relevant to their project or general biotech interests.

Student Lab MAnagers

The Student Lab Managers (SLM) program allows students to expand their lab equipment and safety skills. SLMs hold open lab hours, which are designated time periods when students can use the facility to work on their projects.

They are responsible for ensuring that BIG researchers follow lab safety guidelines at all times. SLMs are trained to oversee researchers’ use of lab equipment.

Student lab managers also teach new BIG members how to perform basic molecular biology techniques.
